Failing to get air or train tickets for the coming Tet holidays, several people switched to buses but were once again disappointed as there too tickets were unavailable, especially on routes to the central provinces.
Long rows of passengers were queued in front of ticket counters at the Mien Dong Bus Station since 6:30am Sunday. However, several were disappointed as staff informed by 11am that tickets had sold out. They now will have to wait until transport companies mobilize more buses.
Most passengers chose higher quality service companies like Chin Nghia, Thuan Thao, Cuc Tu, Hoang Long, Phuong Trang and Binh Tam.
The highest demand for tickets has been recorded on routes to Quang Ngai and Quang Nam Provinces and to Da Nang City.
Passengers still have a chance to buy Tet tickets at the Mien Dong Bus Station when it resumes sales from December 25-January 18. Most buses at the station are without air conditioners but their fares are lower than other high end service providers.
Mien Dong Bus Station said it had mobilized all possible buses including those from other bus stations and tourist companies to meet the annual travel demand during Tet holiday season.
Thuong Thanh Hai, deputy director of the station said that businesses have been asked to divide ticket sales into several stages to prevent chaos and jostling at the ticket counters.
The HCMC Department of Transport has proposed that neighboring provinces of Dong Nai and Binh Duong permit bus companies to pick up passengers from industrial and export processing zones, in order to prevent congestion with all passengers flocking to bus stations.
